Princess Cruises Returns to Barbados as Homeport After 17-Year Absence
Barbados is about to step into a new chapter of Caribbean cruise history. Princess Cruises has confirmed that Bridgetown, Barbados, will serve as a seasonal homeport for its Southern Caribbean programmes in both 2027 and 2028 — the line’s first homeport operation at the island in approximately 17 years. The announcement, with sailings going on sale on March 5, 2026, represents a landmark moment for Barbados tourism and a significant expansion of Princess Cruises’ Caribbean footprint.
The move positions Barbados alongside San Juan, Puerto Rico, as a primary turnaround hub for Princess Cruises’ Southern Caribbean network, giving travelers — particularly those flying from the United Kingdom and Europe — a compelling new entry point into the region.
The Sailings: Ships, Dates, and Destinations
Under the deployment plan, Crown Princess will operate roundtrip voyages from Barbados between January and March 2027, followed by Emerald Princess homeporting on the island from November 2027 through March 2028. Together, the two ships will deliver more than 30 voyages across 15 Caribbean destinations during the two-season run.
Itineraries range from six to nine nights, with seven-night sailings forming the backbone of the schedule. All itineraries include a call at San Juan, Puerto Rico, regardless of whether the voyage departs from Barbados or San Juan — offering guests a natural combination of two iconic Caribbean hubs in a single trip.
Island destinations featured across the programme include Antigua, Dominica, Grenada, Martinique, St. Lucia, St. Kitts, Tortola in the British Virgin Islands, St. Thomas, and St. Maarten — a curated mix of classic Caribbean favourites and lesser-explored gems. Festive holiday departures are also included, with Emerald Princess offering Christmas and New Year sailings from Barbados in December 2027.
Sample fares are compelling for the UK market. A seven-night Crown Princess sailing roundtrip from Barbados, departing March 12, 2027, and calling at San Juan, St. Thomas, St. Maarten, Dominica, and Grenada is priced from 699 GBP per person for an inside cabin. A seven-night Christmas departure aboard Emerald Princess on December 24, 2027, starts from 759 GBP per person.
Why Barbados? The Case for a Southern Caribbean Homeport
The selection of Bridgetown as a seasonal homeport reflects a convergence of factors that make Barbados uniquely suited to this role. Barbados Tourism Marketing Inc.’s senior business development officer for cruise, Tia Broomes, highlighted the depth of ongoing negotiations between BTMI and Barbados Port Inc. with cruise line partners that made this possible.
The Port of Bridgetown is one of the Caribbean’s most established cruise facilities, handling hundreds of ship calls annually. Grantley Adams International Airport — just minutes from the port — provides direct flight connectivity from London Heathrow, Gatwick, Manchester, and Birmingham. ‘Adding Barbados as a homeport to our Southern Caribbean programme provides greater choice and convenience to our guests travelling from the UK,’ said Eithne Williamson, Vice President, Princess Cruises UK, Ireland and EMEA.
The announcement also reflects Barbados’ broader cruise momentum. The island is expecting over 840,000 cruise ship passengers during the 2025-2026 season alone, reinforcing its status as the second-largest homeport in the Caribbean.
Economic and Tourism Impact for Barbados
Homeport operations are qualitatively different from transit port calls for Caribbean destinations. When a cruise line homeports a ship, passengers typically arrive one or more days before their sailing and often extend their stay after disembarkation — driving demand for hotels, restaurants, transportation, and tours far beyond what a standard cruise stop generates.
For the island’s broader tourism ecosystem, the announcement arrives at a fortuitous moment. Barbados is experiencing a wave of luxury resort development in 2026, including the opening of Crystal Cove as Marriott’s first Tribute Portfolio all-inclusive, and the planned debut of Royalton Vessence later this year. A high-profile homeport agreement with Princess Cruises adds a powerful new dimension to that momentum.
Booking and Planning Information
The new Barbados-based sailings opened for bookings on March 5, 2026. Guests can book airfare independently or through Princess Cruises’ Plane Sailing program, which offers added peace of mind including late-arrival protection for the ship’s departure. Travel advisors are encouraged to begin presenting these sailings to clients who have historically enjoyed Southern Caribbean itineraries.
The combination of Barbados as a destination in its own right — with its world-class beaches, rum culture, and culinary scene — alongside a classic Southern Caribbean island-hopping itinerary presents a compelling multi-layered holiday proposition. With over 30 voyages on offer and a broad range of itinerary combinations, there is genuine flexibility for a wide range of traveler profiles.
