Tracking Leatherback Sea Turtles on Trinidad’s North Coast
You hear them before you see them—or rather, you hear the ocean rearranging itself in a way that doesn’t correspond to waves, a slow and emphatic displacement of water at the shoreline that pauses, withdraws slightly, then resumes. On Grande Riviere beach, on Trinidad’s northeastern coast, that sound announces something that has been arriving on this shore every mating season for millions of years. The leatherback sea turtle, Dermochelys coriacea, is the world’s largest reptile—females nesting here can exceed six feet in length and six hundred pounds—and it arrives each year between March and August in numbers that have made Grande Riviere one of the highest-density leatherback nesting beaches in the world.
Ranger Sylvana Medina has been monitoring this beach for the University of the West Indies Centre for Resource Management and Environmental Studies for nine nesting seasons. She meets her volunteer groups—drawn from Trinidad’s environmental science community and a carefully managed number of tourists permitted under the Trinidad and Tobago Forestry Division’s permit system—at the village’s single guesthouse at ten at night, when the beach has quieted and the first turtles have begun emerging. No flashlights. No phones. No white light of any kind, which disrupts the magnetic navigation that guides females back to the beach of their birth. Instead: red-filtered headlamps, worn at belt level to avoid silhouetting against the sky.
The hike from the village to the beach takes ten minutes along a path through forest so close and dense that the sound of the sea disappears entirely for stretches. Then the forest releases you onto a beach that at Grande Riviere is perhaps a quarter-mile long, dark fine sand, backed by steep hills covered in vegetation so thick it appears to have weight. Even before your eyes adjust, you are aware of the turtles. The sound of a leatherback crossing sand is like a tractor in low gear—the tremendous muscular effort of moving a six-hundred-pound animal on land is audible and physical, a vibration through the ground.
Sylvana moved us in single file along the upper beach, reading the situation with the methodical calm of someone who has been doing this work long enough to trust her own judgment completely. She knew which turtles were egg-laying—in their “trance,” she called it, the neurological state during which they are less sensitive to human proximity—and which were in the covering phase, actively scraping sand over their nests and highly mobile. She knew which sections of beach were too crowded with nesting females to approach without risk, and which offered clear sightlines and safe distance.
We stopped behind a female in the laying phase. She was enormous—Sylvana estimated her at five hundred and fifty pounds—with a shell surface that looked less like the classic tortoiseshell pattern of painted turtles and more like a ridged black rubber, stippled with white in irregular patterns unique to each individual. Her flippers, adapted for open-ocean swimming, were splayed wide on the sand to stabilize her body. With each contraction—visible as a full-body shudder—she deposited a cluster of eggs into the chamber she had excavated with her rear flippers over the past hour.
Sylvana counted aloud in a low murmur, recording the clutch size on a data sheet she carries every night. The average clutch on Grande Riviere is around eighty fertilized eggs, supplemented by smaller, yolkless eggs whose function is still debated by researchers. She tags each turtle with a coded identification tag that allows long-term tracking—she has documented females returning to this beach across spans of eight and ten years, their nesting cycles irregular and their fidelity to this specific beach extraordinary. Some of the turtles she monitors now were tagged as hatchlings on this same beach by her predecessor.
After the laying, the turtle entered the covering phase—the vigorous, almost violent sweeping of sand over the nest—and we stepped back. This is when leatherbacks are most reactive. The force of their flippers is significant; Sylvana showed me, later, a photograph of a vehicle-sized depression a large female had made in the upper beach in a single covering session. We watched from thirty feet as the turtle worked through the covering sequence and then, with a slow and grinding determination, turned toward the sea.
The return of a nesting leatherback to the ocean is one of the most affecting things I have witnessed. The same animal that moved awkwardly and laboriously on land transforms the instant the ocean takes her weight—the water lifts her and she accelerates, her flippers finding the rhythm of swimming, and within seconds she is past the break and into dark water, gone. It takes less than a minute. The beach is unchanged; the sand is disturbed; and the animal that was here is now somewhere between this coast and West Africa, where leatherbacks feed on the jellyfish populations that follow the Guinea Current.
On the walk back, Sylvana described the threats to this beach’s future: light pollution from development plans along the coast road, beach erosion accelerated by sea level rise, egg poaching that continues despite legal protections. She described the community in Grande Riviere—mostly fishing families who have shifted partially to eco-tourism income—and the ongoing tension between conservation restrictions and economic need. The turtle patrol employs local guides, local guesthouse operators, local cooks. The leatherback has become an economic engine for a village that once supplemented its fishing income by harvesting the same eggs it now protects.
By midnight, we had documented eleven nesting females and one hatchling emergence from a nest laid sixty days prior—a wild, soft-shelled chaos of small flippers scrambling toward the ocean. Sylvana watched the hatchlings with something that transcended professional satisfaction. After nine seasons, she has not become accustomed to it. That inability to become accustomed, I thought, might be the most important qualification for this kind of work.
