Ackeem Lyn Turns Pageant Runner-Up Into Stepping Stone
At 23, Ackeem Lyn is already learning that success is not always measured by a crown. The recent entrant and first runner-up in the Mister and Mister Teen Universe International competition stepped onto the pageant stage with a goal that went beyond winning. For Lyn, the competition was another opportunity to build his reputation, strengthen his confidence and, ultimately, grow as an actor and as an individual.
A graduate of Tarrant High School and Edna Manley College of the Visual and Performing Arts, Lyn saw the pageant as a chance to challenge himself in a new environment and develop skills that could serve him both personally and professionally. “It helped me with speaking better. It helped me with living low to prepare better with necessities,” he said, reflecting on what he gained from the experience.
For Lyn, much of the value came from the relationships and experiences forged during the competition. When he first met the other young men at rehearsal, he broke the ice with a simple question: how long had they been there?
That initial conversation developed into friendships and shared experiences. The contestants went out together, prepared for activities and even enjoyed cookouts and potlucks. “I love pasta so that’s gonna be my contribution to the potluck,” Lyn said with a laugh.
The experience also reinforced something he already understands about pursuing a career in the arts: growth often comes from being willing to put oneself in unfamiliar situations.
Lyn is no stranger to creative pursuits. His studies at Edna Manley College have included art for animation, while his interest in acting has led to appearances in Benji Black, Chain & Power and Unlicensed. He is also preparing to begin shooting soon on an action and horror biopic, another step toward establishing himself in the film industry.
The pageant, therefore, was not an isolated venture. It was part of a larger plan.
Since he did not take the top title, Lyn is already looking ahead. He intends to try another pageant and is considering Manhunt International as a possible next challenge, particularly because of its potential to help him develop his physique and further shape his presence as a performer.
“I will possibly explore entering Manhunt International to help me build my body. That should have some influence,” he said.
His willingness to keep trying reflects a philosophy that appears throughout his life: keep moving. “I always keep moving…just keep going,” he said when asked what inspires him.
That determination is also at the heart of the advice he offers others. “You may fail at one thing but you will not fail at everything. Never give up on your hopes and dreams because you won’t be the worst person in the world.”
Lyn’s creative outlook has been shaped by the people and environments around him. Among those he credits are teachers Mr. Earl and Mr. Johnson, as well as Studio 174, a group of muralists who have contributed to his appreciation for visual art.
For Lyn, art is more than a subject studied in school or a career path. It is a way of understanding the world. “Art is life and life is art…it is all around us,” he said.
His curiosity extends beyond the arts. Lyn describes himself as someone who likes to try new things, an attitude that has helped him move between animation, acting and pageantry while continuing to explore what is possible.

Family has also played a role in shaping his competitive spirit. Lyn is the eldest of five children, with three brothers and a sister, and says his father is very competitive.
Perhaps fittingly, the young actor has developed a willingness to test himself: whether on a stage, in front of a camera or in a pageant.
Away from the spotlight, Lyn keeps things relatively simple. His favourite colour is blue, he enjoys R&B music, his preferred car is a Honda Civic and China is among the places he would most like to visit.
But the common thread running through his interests is a desire to experience, learn and evolve.
The Mister and Mister Teen Universe International competition may have ended without Lyn taking the crown, but for the aspiring actor, the journey is far from over.
The first runner-up finish has given him more confidence, new connections and another chapter in a career he hopes will eventually see him make a lasting mark on screen.
For Ackeem Lyn, the crown may have been the prize, but the experience was the stepping stone.
